Pressure mounting on government for public vote on ‘no deal’ Brexit

A BMG Research poll for Left Foot Forward today has found that the public backs a referendum on staying in the EU if the government fails to secure a trade deal. The split was 54:46, with 74% of 18-24 year olds backing a vote.

This comes less than a week after a Survation poll for The Mail on Sunday showed that one in two people back the Liberal Democrat policy of a vote on any Brexit deal, or a no deal scenario, against 34% who do not. (more…)

Budget special – £50billion lost means residents will be £687 a year worse off

New studies show that the UK economy has stalled under the Conservatives.

This Conservative crash will wipe £49bn off the UK economy by 2021. That’s £687 for every person in the UK. Or enough to recruit 69,000 new police officers or 66,000 teachers, reports Cllr Allan Knox.

“Dark day for the mother of parliaments as Labour rebels hand Tory Govt sweeping powers.”

Commenting following the vote on the second reading of the EU Cllr. Allan Knox leader of Ribble Valley Lib Dems said:

“This Bill will hand the government unprecedented new powers. MPs, especially those who campaigned to leave the EU on the basis of ‘taking back control’ for our parliament, should be ashamed. Cable: David Davis, what are you doing with our money?

Following David Davis’ comments in the House of Commons that MPs would not be given a vote on the final divorce settlement, leader of the Liberal Democrats Vince Cable said:

Allan Knox welcomes Taylor Review but warns of Brexit threat to workers’ rights and jobs

The Liberal Democrats have broadly welcomed the recommendations of the Matthew Taylor Review, but warned that the government’s Brexit plans pose a threat to workers’ rights and jobs.

Liberal Democrat Allan Knox commented:

“These proposals are broadly sensible, they would both improve workers’ rights in the gig economy and maintain flexibility for those who want it.

“We now need to stamp out abuse of zero hours contracts by giving people the right to request fixed hours, a proposal the Conservatives opposed during the coalition.

“Workers rights underpinned by EU law must be protected from an extreme Conservative Brexit.

“Ultimately, the drive to create more high-quality jobs depends on economic growth and attracting investment. Unless Theresa May rows back on her reckless Brexit plans, we will continue to see falling real wages, slowing economic growth and fewer jobs.”
